RESEARCH: Laura Mulvey's Theory

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly"

In other words women in music videos are made to be looked at by men to make the video more attractive to male audience. There are many videos that prove that theory such as Snoop Dogg's - Sweat which objectifies women:
This theory applies more often with videos for Hip-Hop, Rap, Bubble Pop etc.

However some music videos challenge that such as Run The World by Beyonce:
Even though, women in this video don't wear that much they all have an eye contact with the camera at some point in the video. It creates a connection between the singer/dancers and the audience making the women active and not passive as in the previous video.
