Research - Laura Mulvey's Ideas on Representation

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly." Laura Mulvey - 1992

In a society driven by stereotypes, females and males have been split into their own representations.
While the males are shown as "superior", the females are sexualised. The male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure, which is represented consequently.

We can clearly see that in certain music genres, such as dance or R'N'B music for example.

In this video, women are represented as sexual objects. This is clearly shown by the lack of clothing, the focus of the camera on certain body parts and the males admiring their figures. This video is in accordance with Laura Mulvey's theory.
