Research: Favourite student video

In class, we looked at several music videos of past media students. On the same day, I looked at more student videos at hoe to gain more ideas for our own music video. While browsing, I came across a video by students from 2 years ago that I really liked. Here is the video to Everybody by VV Brown:

Adam, Lisa, Nasima & Sayvita from 283goswell on Vimeo.

I chose this video because unlike the other videos we looked at, it was different and not typical. This song is also under the genre that my group would like to work with. I also like the use of black and white against the red, it works very well with the song.

The relation between the song and the video is disjuncture although there are some elements of illustration when main parts of the chorus have been written on paper for people to hold up; this may be an element we could use in our own video. Although there is no clear narrative, different angles of the singer and written lyrics is edited (jump cuts & wipes) in time of the beat but the camera rarely moves. No base tracks of the singer is used but written lyrics are always seen during the chorus but held up by different people. Due to the genre of music, costume, lyrics and body language, the female artist is not seen as a sexual object since she is not presented that way.

The video itself has many strengths, it fits perfectly with the song in terms of mise en scene and editing. As for weaknesses, in one handheld shot, the camera looked slightly unsteady and some of the editing was offbeat. Other than that, I think this is the perfect model video.
