After she closely studied editing and the camera work in music videos, Carol Vernallis noted that the use of editing is a lot more frequent than in films. The pace of editing is often ruled by the rhythm of the song.
This is a list of her main observations:
- The conventions of continuous editing are broken in order to attract the attention of the viewer.
- Editing may be obvious in order to attract the attention of the viewer.
- Frequent use of jump cuts.
- Base tracks are often used to give a structure to the video.
- The camera may move in time with the music.
To illustrate her ideas, I have embedded 3 videos:
Example - You Changed The Way You Kissed Me I have chosen this video because of the frequent use of jump cuts, base track and also because the camera moves in time with the music.

Moby - Porcelain I have chosen this particular video, to show the use of obvious editing.
And finally, Goldfrapp - Ooh La La, which mainly features the use of base tracks and jump cuts.
